About Us

In 2005, the BC Government announced a goal to make BC the “most literate jurisdiction on the continent.”  To facilitate this goal, A provincial literacy body was created, now Decoda Literacy Solutions.

As part of this initiative, School Districts were mandated to collaborate with community-based providers to create a Community Literacy Plan.

In 2007 information sessions took place in the community (SD#63) and in 2009 the Saanich Peninsula Literacy task group formed with the immediate focus to broaden community involvement and awareness.

Since this time, Saanich Peninsula Literacy has grown to include a consistent membership base, involvement in various community projects that support literacy development and awareness building initiatives.

Saanich Peninsula Literacy work takes place on Southern Vancouver Island throughout the Saanich Peninsula.  Municipalities include Sidney, Brentwood, Saanichton, and Royal Oak/Broadmead.

The Saanich Peninsula is located on the Traditional Territory of the WSANEC people.  There are four First Nations communities—PAUQUACHIN, TSARTLIP, TSEYCUM, and TSAWOUT.
